April 28, 2009 - Taos, New Mexico
Whew, a few days with no internet access on the computer and we’re in withdrawals. I think we’re gonna have to find away to get internet access on the road – it would make life so much easier! Oh well, where have we been and where are we now? On Sunday, Zoey’s 3rd birthday, we made our way to Palo Duro Canyon State Park. Amazingly breathtaking as you drive across the endless plains of North Texas suddenly to have the earth open up before you. I didn’t realize it but Palo Duro is the second largest canyon in the United States, behind the Grand Canyon I assume. First thing we did after we arrived and set up camp was frost Zoey’s b-day cake, sing happy birthday and open a couple presents. Books of course. Our campsite was right down on the canyon floor so we had the red rock canyon walls all round us. It was the heat of the day so we waited till late afternoon to set off on a hike. Of course, a 3 yr old who hasn’t napped is not prime hiking material so the hike ended before it began. Instead we ended up biking in the park and climbing up to see a cool cave in the canyon wall. Zoey was in heaven. Joe too. I just kept telling Joe to keep Zoey away from the steep cliff drop offs! Monday morning we did a great bike and hike in the canyon. I even did some semi mountain biking on my bike which is so not a mountain bike. We got to try out the child carrier we bought off caigslist for hiking and see that it is going to come in VERY handy. Fabulous hike through the canyon and then off we headed to New Mexico in the afternoon!

We headed to northern New Mexico so we could drive through the Sangre De Cristos Mountain range into Taos. It was so wonderful seeing the mountains rising up in the distance after so many hundreds of miles of high plains. We bedded down in the tiny town of Springer, NM for the night before finishing the drive today into Taos where we plan to spend a couple days hanging out. Joe and Zoey already found the skate park and I the visitors center. The weather is cool and dry and the mountains are gorgeous all around us.

Glad to see you are having such a good time! And, I always get excited when I am able to see the mountains in New Mexico from a distance when I am driving home to Colorado, so I know the feeling you had! The Sangre de Cristo Mountains are really pretty...I've stayed in a cabin in the part of the range that is in Southern Colorado.

I'm living Vicariously through y'all.
We drove right by Paloduro canyon on the way home last summer but were headed for the barn at that point. Sounds like y'all are off to a great start! Looks like a pretty good Skate park? . The boys are remembering the fun they had visiting all the skate parks last summer. All is well here at Mueller
How did the Generator work out?

Sounds like a wonderful vacation. Your writing is so very well composed, as always, and really makes me feel like I am there with you. I can see the walls of the canyon
Have great fun and enjoy!
Happy Birthday Zoey! I can't believe she is 3. Time flies.

Trying to go back and catch up on your adventures. I used to live near Springer (in a little town 12 miles North) called Maxwell. It wasn't actually even considered a town - called a village. New Mexico - especially the Taos area is beautiful. Happy Belated Birthday Zoey!!
