May 9, 2009 - Monterey, CA
Well Zoey is officially sick and Joe and I both feel like we’ve got something as well….not very good track record considering we’ve been sick twice now in the two weeks on the road. Oh well, it is what it is. Zoey had a low grade fever today but she rallied and we did get to go out and enjoy Monterey some today. Now she’s in bed asleep but hacking away coughing….it’s gonna be a long night in a small trailer. Even though we’re at my Aunt’s and she has a room for us we’ve decided to sleep in the trailer because we’ve acclimated to it and have everything we need at hand. It’s very comfy as long as we spend most of the day OUT of it.
We drove up the California coast, through Big Sur, on Hwy 1 yesterday. I wish I could say I loved the drive but I don’t like heights and a good deal of the drive is on the side of mountain with the ocean straight down below. It was beautiful, amazing vistas, and I’m glad we did it but once is enough. We stopped and took a tour of Heart castle which Joe and I both really enjoyed – talk about excess. William Randolph Hearst had a little too much money for his own good I think but his estate was pretty incredible, I’d recommend seeing it to anyone passing through. And talk about a view! He had artwork and antiques that would rival a good museum.

We had wanted to stay in Big Sur for the night and enjoy that area but we didn’t make reservations ahead of time and being a Friday everything was booked by the time we got there. I think the heat spell has driven a lot of folks to the coast where it is easily 30 degrees cooler than inland. We didn’t realize that being on a coastal highway with ocean on one side and mountains on the other would render our cell phones useless so we just had to wait to get there to see what was available and had no luck. So we motored on to my Aunt’s house in Monterey where we plan to hang out for a few nights at least and most likely use as a home base while we do San Francisco and Marin County where my Mom grew up. I don’t think it would be wise to try and take a trailer into San Fran so we’ll leave it here and go up for a ay or two.
If you haven’t been to the Monterey Peninsula it is one of the most beautiful places. The beaches, the hills, the bay, it is all picture perfect. And the weather can’t be beat. Today while Zoey was feeling a little better we went to the Dennis the Menace playground which is this super colossal playground with a real steam engine that has been made safe and turned loose on the kids for climbing, tunnels, mazes hanging bridges, playscapes galore, a lake with paddle boats – basically a child’s heaven on earth. Then we went down to a small beach on the south end of the bay so Zoey could get her beach fix for the day. She could spend all day running towards the ocean when the waves go out and running back up on the beach squealing in delight as the next wave comes in. What’s nice about the bay is it is sheltered so the waves are child sized and perfect for her.

Check out the Mission Inn Ranch which is owned by Clint Eastwood and is in Carmel. They have hands down THE BEST Sunday Brunch I've ever had. And, make sure you go to Cannery Row so you can get some salt water taffy! Zoey will have a blast in some of the places down there because they have big barrels full of every flavor you can think of, and you just go through with a basket and pick as many as you'd like.
