May 15, 2009 - San Francisco, CA

Wow, it’s been so long since I’ve written a post that I can’t remember everything we’ve done since then!  We continue to be hobbled by illness and injuries but we keep trudging along and enjoying it for the most part.

We drove into San Francisco yesterday and are heading out today to do the cable cars and other touristy stuff.  The five nights before that were spent in Monterey at my Aunt Nancy and Uncle George’s house.  Zoey got sick the morning after we got to Monterey and stayed sick most of the visit so we ended up staying longer and dropping Yosemite from our itinerary to give her, and now Joe and me, time to recuperate.

Monterey is a great place to vacation.  The bay is a protected marine reserve so we got to see hundreds of sea lions up close, sea otters, and harbor seals all just hanging out on the shore or in the bay.

And the aquarium in Monterey Bay is world class – Zoey really enjoyed it, especially the touch tanks where she could pick up sea stars (starfish), abalone, and other strange sea creatures.

Monterey also has a fantastic bike trail along the beach for miles and miles converted from an old rail line so finally, on our last day, we got to do some bike riding along the coast.  We were also able to do a little hiking out at Point Lobos.  It’s just a beautiful area.

Unfortunately we also had a visit to a doc in the box which took up a day to get Zoey medication and an emergency room visit for Joe to make sure his wrist wasn’t broken, which it isn’t – just badly sprained.   We were grateful that if we had to be sick that we were in Monterey with family and a home base to hang out at.

I’m bummed we didn’t get to Yosemite but flexibility is key and I know we’re going to get to do many other beautiful parks along the way including Olympic, Glacier, Yellowstone, Grand Tetons, Zion, etc…the list of possibilities goes on and on.  We’re now spending 3 nights in San Francisco to enjoy the city, visit my cousin George who lives here and spend some time visiting where my Mom grew up, my grandparents graves, etc.  Joe caught what Zoey had and is feeling horrible but I seem to only have a mild case of the same thing, knock on wood.  So we’re trying to do as much as possible and take it easy at the same time...is that possible?
