May 19, 2009 - Weed, CA

We are almost to Oregon!  As much as I complain about Joe’s skateboarding fanaticism I have to admit that it has come in very handy for overnight boon docking.  We’ve now stayed overnight at 4 different skateparks because they are usually located within a park that’s quiet at night.  We’ve also boon docked at a number of Walmarts but those are last resort and we’re getting to a part of the country where there’s not that many Walmarts around to take advantage of.  Last night we stayed in Weed, California.  I know, what a name.  But it truly exists, population 2980 as of the 2000 census, and it had a skatepark we could camp out at.  There are a TON of skateparks in the northwest so Joe’s in heaven.  Today, in less than an hour we’ll be in Oregon and will be into Bend tonite to hook up with Joe’s family, Uncle Pat and Aunt Ramona.

We had a great stay in San Fran but not nearly long enough which is our problem with most places we stay – too much we want to do and not enough time to do them in.  We’ll definitely have to make a trip back in a few years when Zoey is older.  Every time we leave a place that we’ve stayed a few days Zoey asks ‘Can we go back there soon’?  Guess we’ll have to redo our road trip in a few years (NOT!).  Lol.  Zoey loved the cable cars and we spent some time with my cousin George eating great Thai food in the Castro – then headed back to our hotel on these old street cars that SF brings in from all over the world – ours was from Milan Italy.  And of course we had to go to Ghiradelli Square and have huge sundaes.  Then on Sunday we headed up to Marin County, to San Rafael, north of the Golden Gate bridge, where my Mom grew up.  We visited the house she grew up in so I could show Joe and Zoey and visited my grandparent’s grave.  We also did two skateparks there, three if you include the one we did in SF before we headed out of town.  And yesterday we did Muir Woods which contains a coastal redwood forest, which are the tallest living things in the world – they get up to 368 feet high!  Gorgeous, gorgeous part of the country – lush and green due to all the moisture off the ocean, cool weather, lots of mountains so twisty, windy roads.  The temperature dropped 45 degrees between inland and the coast within an hour of driving, from 100 to 55 degrees.  Then we headed north.  We skipped the coast of Northern California in favor of making some miles – we have now driven 3,210 miles to date and aren’t even halfway through our trip!
